Don’t go too fast or too slow - if the razor is skipping or catching, you’re probably going the wrong speed. Just move steadily and without applying much pressure at all.

Make sure you go with the grain on your first pass - meaning, the way you would pet a dog (so you’d be “laying down” the beard rather than lifting it up).
